Holiday house, Mesi, Naxos island
The project involves the reconstruction of a derelict vernacular house into a modern holiday home.
The building is a single room of rectangular shape which was built originally to accommodate people, pets, natural products and seeds. The local family law was catalytic for the dominance of the single room houses in the mountainous villages of Naxos island. According to this law, the house including the household was given as inheritance to the newly married daughters of the family.
The house maintains original features such as thick stone walls with internal coves for storage and a grand fireplace ‘hestia’ used for cooking. The back of the room leads to a narrow strip area used as cellar.
The proposals include for an upper floor to be used for bedrooms and the adjacent courtyard will be converted to a family dinning room. All original features will be restored back to their original status and all windows and doors will be designed to match the Cycladic vernacular style.
